Hannah Szenes was born in 1921 in Budapest into a wealthy Jewish family. A gifted poet, she emigrated to Palestine in 1939. During World War II she volunteered for a British SOE mission: parachuting behind enemy lines to help rescue Hungarian Jews.

Captured at the Hungarian border in 1944, tortured for months, she never revealed information about the mission. On November 7, 1944, she was executed by firing squad in Budapest. She was 23 years old.

Kolodko’s bronze shows her emerging from a stone fragment — still in motion. Kolodko’s bronze figure leaps from a stone slab roughly carved into the outline of Hungary, caught mid-motion in a parachute jump. The statue was installed on 8 March 2020, International Women’s Day — the opening piece of the “#wonderwomanbudapest” project by walking-tour initiative Hosszúlépés.
