MICROBUDAPEST

About the Project

The tiny bronze figures by Hungarian artist Mihály Kolodko are scattered across Budapest — usually installed without announcement, with no official signage.

This site presents a thematically grouped selection of his works in and around Budapest — not a complete list, but an invitation to discover more on your own.

All texts, research, and interpretations were created independently. Kolodko himself rarely gives official explanations of his works — the stories on this site therefore reflect an independent investigation, not an authorized reading.

Most of these statues were placed in public space without official permission (guerrilla art) – however, some are commissioned works or were installed with the owner’s consent. Regardless, individual figures are regularly stolen, disappear, get moved, damaged, or reworked by the artist himself. There is no guarantee that every statue listed here still exists at its stated location. If you notice a discrepancy, I’d appreciate a short message via the contact form.

A note on political content

Mihail Kolodko, born in Uzhhorod (Ukraine), addresses explicitly political themes in several of his works — e.g. the conflict between Ukraine and Russia (in the sculpture “The Message” on Moszkva sétány). These works are personal statements by the artist.

Including a work in our documentation, however, does not imply agreement with the artist’s political statements, positions, or wordplay. We simply document what can be found in public space, without adopting the content of individual pieces as our own.

We have deliberately not included a work depicting the founder of Zionism in this documentation. We wish to explicitly distance ourselves from Zionism as a political ideology, from the political developments and consequences associated with it, and from the forms of violence and oppression resulting from it.
